Vernon Electric Cooperative - Community Connection

Youth Leadership Congress

TheYouth Leadership Congress(YLC) is offered to high school students from around the state by Wisconsin's electric cooperatives and is held each year during the first week of June for three days and two nights on the campus of the UW-River Falls. Interesting and interactive presentations are offered on topics ranging from violence in schools to understanding personality styles.

Since 1964, electric cooperatives and the UW-River Falls have cosponsored this event to demonstrate to high school students the basics of cooperatives and how they can apply the ideals and philosophies of cooperation to their lives.

Through a mix of seminar sessions and hands-on activities, participants are exposed to a variety of real-life issues and are given the opportunity to identify and explore their leadership potential. Topnotch professional speakers and college professors provide students with information and tools to deal with the weighty issues teenagers face every day.

Seminar sessions may focus on many topics, including leadership, personality styles, and selecting a college. Students will also participate in a series of community projects in and around the River Falls area.

The YLC is a fun and unique educational event that is planned by and for teenagers. Just like a real cooperative, seven students are elected by their peers to serve on the Youth Board. This board then plans and conducts the YLC.
