Scholarship ProgramNon-Traditional Scholarship Application Form Non-Traditional Scholarship Guide Vernon Electric Cooperative offers one $750 scholarship to a senior in one of the following high schools plus one At-Large scholarship: Aquinas, Brookwood, Cashton, Central, Cornerstone Christian Academy, De Soto, Hillsboro, Kickapoo, La Farge, Luther, Royall, Sparta, Viroqua, Westby, Wonewoc and Youth Initiative. Of the seventeen seniors who receive a scholarship, six will be eligible to attend the Youth Leadership Congress at UW-River Falls, this summer. The six will be selected via an essay contest. The students with the six best essays will receive an additional $100 added to their scholarship. Scholarship recipients attending the YLC will have their essay submitted to an essay contest sponsored by the YLC and possibly have another $250 to $1,000 added to their scholarship. Essay awards are $250 for third, $500 for second and $1,000 for first. All in all, a VEC scholarship recipient could go off to college with a total of $1,850 in scholarship money. There is also one $750 "nontraditional" scholarship offered to older students that are going back to school for retraining or development of new skills for employment. Applicants must have completed at least one semester of study at a two or four-year accredited school and have maintained a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. The applicant must be either a member or a member's child or spouse of a member of VEC. The nontraditional scholarship applicant does not need to submit an essay or attend the YLC. The scholarships are funded through the forfeiture of unclaimed capital credits to the Federated Youth Foundation. The program provides a way to reinvest this money into the communities from where it was generated.
